Developments from the sea: The most extravagant land extensions around the world
As the world's population continues to grow and people become ever more
concentrated in major cities across the world, land is becoming increasingly
scarce. The answer? Create more land by reclaiming it from the sea. Land
extension is nothing new, but over the years these highly technical projects
have become increasingly bigger and more ambitious than ever before. Let's take
a look at some of the biggest and most extravagant land extension projects in
the world, from expanding coastlines to the creation of artificial islands.
Land extensions around the world
Portier Cove, Monaco
Located in the fashionable district of Larvotto, Portier Cove is one of the most ambitious projects in Europe, reclaiming some 15 acres of land from the sea. Designed by Pritzker prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, this cutting-edge land extension will transform the tiny city-state by adding a new marina, restaurants, open spaces, and super prime real estate, including luxury apartments and villas. This land extension will also boast sophisticated green technologies, including solar panels, e-bike stations, thermal pumps and rainwater recovery systems. The land extension project is set for completion in 2025.
Palm Jumeirah, Dubai
Arguably one of the most famed land extension projects in recent years, the tree-shaped Palm Juemeirah in the United Arab Emirates state of Dubai extends into the Persian Gulf. It boasts lavish hotels, super prime real estate, upmarket restaurants, and a sweeping boardwalk offering spectacular views of the city. It is just one of three land extension projects - called the Palm Islands - which include Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira, although both the latter two are currently on hold.
The
Heart of Europe, Dubai
Another land extension of epic proportions in the glitzy state of Dubai is The Heart of Europe, consisting of six man-made islands styled after European cities. The $5 billion project will be able to accommodate some 16,000 tourists, who will be able to lay their heads at a selection of lavish resorts and holiday homes. Part of The World land extension development - a huge archipelago of 300 artificial islands, of which almost all remain undeveloped - the Heart of Europe is set to be completed later this year.
City of Pearl, Philippines
Spanning some 1,010-hectares, City of Pearl is set to be one of the largest land extension projects the world has ever seen. Designed as an international destination, construction is set to span two decades on this mixed-use development which will include a business district, retail outlets, residential housing, waterfront promenade, golf course, driverless railway system, water taxi network, marina, and ample open spaces. This new development will also be eco-friendly, relying on solar and tidal energy for its power consumption, alongside cutting-edge artificial intelligence which will ensure this new city operates at the most optimal level at all times.
